Shreyas is the third of four next-generation offshore patrol vessels being built by GRSE for the Indian Navy. The four vessels form part of a wider 11-ship programme, with the remaining seven being constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited.
The vessels are designed for a range of maritime missions, including maritime surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and anti-piracy operations.
The launch marks a construction milestone in India’s indigenous warship-building programme. However, the launch announcement does not mean that Shreyas has been commissioned or entered operational service.
Editorial Analysis
Why This Matters
Offshore patrol vessels support maritime monitoring and security operations, including the protection of offshore infrastructure and responses to incidents at sea. The programme is intended to augment the Indian Navy’s existing offshore patrol vessel capabilities. The construction of these vessels at Indian shipyards also supports domestic defence manufacturing. Their eventual operational contribution will depend on the completion of construction, trials and the formal commissioning process.
The project aligns with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives, which seek to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing and shipbuilding capabilities.
