India may soon witness a major change in its currency system as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) prepares to conduct field trials of polymer-based banknotes. The Central Government has approved the RBI’s proposal to introduce plastic currency notes on a trial basis for ₹10 and ₹20 denominations.
According to the government’s plan, around one billion pieces each of ₹10 and ₹20 polymer notes will be tested to evaluate their performance, durability and security features under real-world conditions.
Polymer notes are made using a special synthetic material instead of traditional cotton-based paper. These notes are considered more resistant to moisture, tearing and everyday wear, which can increase their circulation life compared to conventional currency notes.
The RBI and government are evaluating polymer currency as a way to improve the quality and security of banknotes. Polymer technology also allows additional security features that can make counterfeiting more difficult.
However, the government has clarified that existing paper currency notes will not be withdrawn immediately. The polymer notes will first go through testing, and any wider rollout will depend on the success of the trials.
Countries including Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom already use polymer currency notes. India has considered the idea earlier as well, but the latest approval marks a fresh step towards testing the technology.
Key Points
- RBI to conduct trial of polymer currency notes.
- Trial planned for ₹10 and ₹20 denominations.
- Around one billion notes of each denomination will be tested.
- Polymer notes are more durable and water-resistant.
- Existing paper currency will continue for now.
- Final decision depends on trial results.
Why It Matters
Currency notes are used daily across India and face damage due to repeated handling, moisture and wear. Polymer technology could help increase the lifespan of notes while adding stronger security features against fake currency.
For citizens, the biggest question remains whether old paper notes will stop working. At present, there is no announcement of replacing existing currency notes.
