Indian Railways recorded its highest-ever freight loading for the month of October in 2026, transporting 145.07 million tonnes of goods during the month. The figure represents an increase of 8.32% compared with the 133.93 million tonnes transported in October 2025, according to the Ministry of Railways.
The latest performance reflects increased movement across several important commodity categories, including food grains, domestic coal, clinker, iron ore and container cargo. Food grain loading registered the strongest growth among the major categories, rising by 26.3% compared with the corresponding month last year.

Key Highlights
Important points readers should notice.
Issue/Event: Indian Railways recorded its highest-ever October freight loading of 145.07 million tonnes.
Location: India.
Authority/Organisation: Ministry of Railways, Government of India.
Action Taken: Rail freight transportation increased across several major commodity categories, including food grains and domestic coal.
- Impact: Higher freight movement supports the transportation of essential commodities and strengthens India's logistics network.
Domestic coal loading increased by 16%, while balance other goods recorded growth of 11%. Clinker loading rose by 10.4%, domestic container traffic by 6.3% and iron ore loading by 5%. Mineral oil loading increased by 1.9%, while finished steel recorded a smaller rise of 0.5%.
The railway network also strengthened coal transportation to power houses during October. Indian Railways supplied an average of 469.8 coal rakes per day, compared with 393.2 rakes per day in October 2025. This represents an increase of 19.5% and reflects the higher movement of domestic coal to meet power-sector requirements.
The growth was not limited to October alone. During the first seven months of the 2026–27 financial year, from April to October, Indian Railways transported 978.78 million tonnes of freight, compared with 935.10 million tonnes during the same period of the previous financial year. This represents cumulative growth of 4.67%.
Editorial Analysis
Why This Matters
Railways play a major role in transporting bulk goods across India. Agricultural produce, coal, steel, iron ore and industrial materials depend on reliable transportation networks to reach markets, factories, ports and power plants. The increase in food grain loading is particularly relevant because rail transportation supports the movement of agricultural commodities over long distances. Higher coal movement is also significant for power houses that rely on domestic supplies. The latest figures provide an indication of growing freight activity, although the wider economic impact will also depend on logistics costs, infrastructure capacity and the efficiency of goods movement.
Passenger transportation also recorded an increase during October. Indian Railways carried 64.72 crore passengers during the month, compared with 63.52 crore in October 2025. Between April and October 2026, passenger numbers reached 443.8 crore, up from 431.4 crore in the corresponding period last year.
The non-suburban passenger segment registered growth of 4.2%, while the suburban segment increased by 1.7%.
Freight transportation remains an important part of India's logistics network, connecting industrial centres, agricultural markets, ports, power plants and other economic destinations. Higher rail freight volumes can support the movement of essential commodities and strengthen the role of railways in the country's supply chain.
However, the October loading figures alone do not establish whether transportation costs have fallen or whether delivery times have improved. Those outcomes would require separate performance data.
