In a significant development in India's crackdown on organised criminal networks operating across international borders, the United States has detained Harichand Jat, popularly known as Hari Boxer, an alleged key member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
The detention was secured by the Rajasthan Police's Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) through sustained coordination with international agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Interpol. Who Is Hari Boxer?
Editorial Analysis
Why This Matters
The detention highlights the growing importance of international cooperation in tackling organised crime. Criminal networks that allegedly operate across borders can create significant challenges for domestic law enforcement agencies. Tracking their members requires intelligence-sharing, international notices and cooperation between law enforcement authorities in different countries. If the legal process results in Boxer's return, Indian investigators could gain an opportunity to pursue multiple cases and examine the alleged operational structure of the wider criminal network.
Harichand Jat, 40, is a resident of Chatarpura village in Rajasthan's Kotputli-Behror district.
According to Rajasthan Police, Boxer allegedly operated criminal activities from overseas and was involved in coordinating extortion threats and firing incidents across several Indian states.
Investigators have linked his alleged activities to Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Pune.
Police have alleged that the network used internet-based communication platforms, including WhatsApp and Signal, to threaten businessmen and demand money. In cases where extortion demands were allegedly not met, members of the network were accused of resorting to firing incidents to intimidate targets and their families.
Rajasthan Police records indicate that more than 22 criminal cases have been registered against him in the state. These include allegations involving attempted murder, extortion, violations of the Arms Act and organised crime.
Alleged Links to High-Profile Shooting Incidents
Investigators have also linked Boxer to several shooting and extortion incidents that attracted significant attention.
One of the cases concerns the firing outside Bollywood filmmaker Rohit Shetty's residence in Mumbai. Police have stated that Boxer allegedly claimed responsibility for the incident through a social media post.
His alleged association with the gang's extortion network has also brought him under investigation in connection with threats targeting businessmen and individuals in different parts of the country.
These allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.
How Indian Agencies Tracked Him Down
According to Rajasthan Police, Boxer left India in April 2023 and subsequently travelled through multiple countries before entering the United States through Mexico using an illegal migration route.
Investigators continued tracking his international movements with assistance from central and international agencies.
An Interpol Red Corner Notice was issued against him on November 14, 2024, following coordination with the CBI.
The Rajasthan AGTF subsequently shared intelligence and technical inputs with international authorities. Police said nine Interpol communications were sent to US authorities between December 2024 and July 2026.
A provisional arrest request, an updated dossier and fingerprint information were also forwarded as part of efforts to secure his detention.
The coordinated operation eventually led to his detention by US immigration authorities.
India Moves Towards Bringing Him Back
Following the detention, Indian authorities are working towards completing the necessary legal formalities to bring Boxer to India.
The process involves coordination between Rajasthan Police, central agencies and relevant US authorities.
His return could allow Indian investigators to question him in connection with the cases registered against him and examine the alleged wider network involving weapons suppliers, financiers and other associates.
However, the detention should not be confused with a completed extradition. His transfer to India will depend on the applicable legal and immigration procedures in the United States.
