The Story Behind The News

Context, analysis and verified insights that explain the story beyond the headline.

Background

Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) refers to the parts of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir that have remained under Pakistan's administration since the 1947–48 conflict. India maintains that the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir, including PoJK, is an integral part of the country and has consistently objected to any political or administrative measures taken by Pakistan in the territory. In recent years, India has repeatedly criticised Pakistan over developments in PoJK, including elections, governance measures and constitutional changes, arguing that such actions have no legal validity and cannot alter India's sovereign claim over the region. Pakistan, however, rejects India's position and administers the territory under its own constitutional framework.

Timeline

1947–48 The first India-Pakistan war over Jammu and Kashmir ends with a UN-mediated ceasefire, leaving a part of the region under Pakistan's control, which India refers to as Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). 1972 The Simla Agreement is signed after the 1971 war, with both countries agreeing to resolve bilateral issues, including Jammu and Kashmir, through peaceful means. August 2019 India revokes the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and reorganises the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Pakistan strongly objects to the move. 2019–2025 India repeatedly states that PoJK is an integral part of India and opposes administrative or political measures taken by Pakistan in the region. June–August 2026 The MEA alleges continued unrest and human rights concerns in PoJK and rejects Pakistan's so-called local elections, calling them a "complete farce."

India on Tuesday rejected the so-called local elections conducted in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), describing them as a "complete farce." The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the electoral exercise could not conceal what it described as the continuing repression and deteriorating human rights situation in the region.

Addressing a media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the so-called elections were merely a hollow exercise and did not reflect the realities faced by people living in PoJK.
