A key event will be the inauguration of the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail project. The approximately 14.6-kilometre corridor has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹4,900 crore and includes a 3.7-kilometre double-decker structure.
The corridor is intended to improve connectivity between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city centre. Although the signalling systems are designed to support driverless operations, driverless services are not scheduled to begin immediately. The initial operating arrangements will involve onboard staff while further testing and certification for unattended operation continue.
The Prime Minister is also scheduled to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for national highway projects worth around ₹3,700 crore. These include the four-laning of the 36-kilometre Vadugapatti–Therkuvenganallur section of NH-744 and a 30-kilometre section of the Madurai Ring Road on NH-744A. He will also lay the foundation stone for a four-lane bypass at Thiruvarur on NH-83.
Editorial Analysis
Why This Matters
The Metro expansion is intended to improve public transport connectivity in Chennai’s western suburbs. Its practical benefits will depend on service availability, station access, operating arrangements and passenger demand. Highway and railway improvements could support regional travel and the movement of goods. Port development may improve cargo handling and logistics, while the proposed petroleum investment is intended to expand production capacity for lubricant base stocks. The Brain Centre initiative at IIT Madras is relevant to neuroscience research and the development of detailed human brain maps.
Railway infrastructure forms another part of the programme. Projects worth more than ₹750 crore include the Karaikal–Peralam railway line, three rail flyovers in Coimbatore and surrounding areas, and the inauguration of five redeveloped Amrit Bharat stations at Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakkudi and Namakkal.
Port infrastructure will also feature in the visit. At Chennai Port, four projects are scheduled for inauguration: a paved storage yard, four export-import godowns, an upgraded cruise terminal and a seafarers’ club.
At V.O. Chidambaranar Port and Kamarajar Port, the programme includes additional infrastructure projects intended to improve cargo-handling capacity and logistics. These include port development works and dredging-related initiatives.
In the petroleum sector, Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for a Group II/III lube oil base stocks project at Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Manali refinery. The proposed project has an estimated cost of ₹1,620 crore and a planned annual capacity of 270,000 metric tonnes.
The programme also includes the dedication of the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras. The centre’s scientific initiative involves developing high-resolution, three-dimensional maps of more than 100 human brains. The programme also includes the release of C-STROKE, an atlas containing annotated microscopic sections from a stroke-affected brain.
At around 12:15 p.m., the Prime Minister is scheduled to perform darshan and puja at Jalakandeswarar Temple in Chennai before visiting the Brain Centre at IIT Madras.
Later, at around 3 p.m., he is scheduled to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School and address the gathering.
The overall programme covers projects valued at more than ₹13,000 crore, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. The planned Metro inauguration is one of several infrastructure developments included in the visit.
